Equipment Location Services Undertaking Delivered

NetLocate delivers BT’s Undertaking for the launch of equipment location services by the agreed deadline of 22 March 2006.

As part of the Undertakings given to Ofcom, BT agreed to provide Communication Providers with the facility to place specific equipment within BT exchanges on reasonable commercial terms.

To meet its obligation and following a detailed consultation with industry, BT Wholesale announced the launch and immediate availability of BT NetLocate on the 16 March 2006.

What have we done?

BT NetLocate has been specifically designed to meet BT’s obligations under section 7.2 of the Undertakings. While BT already sells space in its exchanges via the fully commercial Locate DataSuite product, BT NetLocate provides this space on more advantageous commercial terms to Communications Providers. When using BT NetLocate, the type of equipment that can be placed within exchanges is restricted as specified within the Undertakings**.

Full details of the product are available from www.btwholesale.com

** The Undertakings permit the following equipment of a Communications Provider to be placed in a BT exchange:

  • Access network termination equipment

  • Broadband servers

  • Video servers

  • Aggregation equipment for backhaul

  • Private circuit termination

  • Any additional equipment reasonably identified by any other Communications Provider and agreed in writing between BT and Ofcom.

Note that none of the equipment shall be used in the provision of Wireless Telegraphy as defined in the Wireless Telegraphy Act 1949 (as amended or re-enacted).

Equipment placed in BT exchanges under NetLocate is also limited to equipment:

  • Which is under the sole control of the Communications Provider

  • Which is used by that Communications Provider for the purpose of running and operating its own Electronic Communications Network

  • Which provides Electronic Communications Services that make use of Network Access and

  • Which is connected to the BT network.
